How an IPL Photofacial Works

Intense Pulsed Light delivers precisely calibrated pulses of broad-spectrum light deep into the skin. Unlike lasers, IPL uses multiple wavelengths (515–1200 nm) at once, so it can address a wide range of skin concerns in a single session, with results that build over time.

The light energy is absorbed by the skin's own chromophores, breaking down imperfections without harming the surrounding tissue:

  • Melanin in pigmented lesions: age spots, sun damage and uneven tone

  • Hemoglobin in visible blood vessels: redness, rosacea and broken capillaries

  • Collagen stimulation: improved texture and a youthful glow

The result is clearer, more even-toned skin that keeps improving with each treatment as your body's natural renewal process takes over.

What IPL Treats

Sun damage and age spots

Targets excess melanin to fade dark spots, freckling and discoloration caused by UV exposure.

Rosacea and redness

Reduces diffuse redness, flushing and the appearance of broken capillaries associated with rosacea.

Broken capillaries and veins

Collapses superficial blood vessels on the face and body, clearing visible vascular lesions.

Uneven skin tone

Improves overall complexion uniformity by addressing hyperpigmentation and melasma.

Skin texture and pores

Stimulates collagen production to refine skin texture, reduce pore size and improve firmness.

Acne and post-acne marks

Reduces active acne and fades post-inflammatory redness and residual red marks.

Your IPL Treatment Journey

1. Consultation

A thorough skin assessment determines your Fitzpatrick skin type, concerns and treatment plan. We screen for contraindications and set realistic expectations.

2. Preparation

Avoid sun exposure and stop photosensitizing products 2 weeks before. Arrive with clean skin: no makeup, retinoids or active acids.

3. Treatment

A cooling gel is applied, then the IPL handpiece delivers precise pulses across the treatment area. Most clients describe a warm snap, similar to a rubber band.

4. Recovery and results

Mild redness fades within hours. Dark spots may temporarily darken before flaking off over 1–2 weeks, revealing clearer skin beneath.

What You Can Expect

  • 70% reduction in sun damage: most clients see significant lightening of age spots and hyperpigmentation after a full series of 3–6 sessions.

  • 85% improvement in redness: rosacea sufferers report a marked reduction in background redness and visible blood vessels.

  • 3–6 sessions for optimal results, spaced 3–4 weeks apart. Maintenance sessions every 6–12 months keep results long-lasting.

  • No downtime: return to your routine immediately. Mild redness usually subsides within 1–4 hours.

IPL Before and After Care

Before your treatment

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for 4 weeks before treatment

  • Stop retinoids, vitamin C serums and exfoliating acids 5–7 days before

  • Tell your provider about all medications, especially antibiotics and hormonal treatments

  • Arrive with a clean, makeup-free face

  • Do not wax, pluck or use depilatory creams on the treatment area

  • Avoid photosensitizing supplements (St. John's Wort, high-dose fish oil) for one week before

After your treatment

  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily to protect your results

  • Keep the area cool and avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours

  • Do not pick or exfoliate darkening spots; let them shed naturally over 7–14 days

  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturizer for the first week

  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms and hot showers for 48 hours

  • Resume active skincare only once skin has settled, usually after one week

IPL Photofacial FAQs

Is IPL safe for all skin tones?

IPL is most effective and safest on Fitzpatrick types I–IV (fair to medium skin). Darker skin types (V–VI) carry a higher risk of pigmentation changes. At your consultation we'll assess your skin tone and recommend the safest approach.

How many sessions will I need?

Most clients see meaningful improvement after 3 sessions, with optimal results after a full series of 5–6 treatments spaced 3–4 weeks apart. The exact number depends on your concerns and how your skin responds.

Does IPL hurt?

Most clients describe a warm snap or rubber band sensation. Our devices include built-in cooling to minimize discomfort. Bony and thin-skinned areas may feel more intense, but overall IPL is very well tolerated.

When will I see results?

Pigmented spots typically darken before flaking off over 1–2 weeks. Redness improvements can be visible within days. Full results from a session usually appear 2–3 weeks after treatment, with cumulative improvement across the series.

Can I combine IPL with other treatments?

IPL can be paired with CO2 Fractional Laser or Laser Hair Removal on a planned schedule. We never combine IPL with active skincare acids or treatments in the same session. Your provider will guide you on the best combination.

Who should avoid IPL?

IPL is not suitable for clients who are pregnant, on Accutane (or within 6 months of finishing it), taking photosensitizing medications, or who have active skin infections in the treatment area. A full screening is completed before every treatment.
