IPL pre & after care
Pre-Treatment Instructions:
If you’re preparing for an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or BBL (Broad Band Light) photo facial, here are some important pre-care steps to follow:
- Sun Protection: Use a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from sun
exposure. Avoid tanning and self-tanners for at least 4 to 6 weeks before and after
treatments.
- Avoid Smoking: Refrain from smoking for at least six weeks before your IPL treatment.
- Medications: Stop any medications that may cause excess bleeding and discontinue
antibiotics (if advised by your general physician)1. Additionally, avoid retinoids that can
make your skin sensitive.
- Hydration: Drink water before and after your treatment to keep your skin hydrated.
Remember, these steps will help enhance your results and protect your skin during IPL therapy.
After your IPL treatment, follow these important aftercare steps to ensure optimal results and
minimize any potential side effects
- Sun Protection: Continue using sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin
from UV radiation. Sun exposure can worsen pigmentation issues, so diligent sun
protection is crucial.
- Cool Compress: Apply a cool compress or ice pack to the treated area if you experience
any redness or discomfort. This can help soothe the skin and reduce inflammation.
- Avoid Heat: Avoid hot showers, saunas, and hot tubs for at least 48 hours after treatment. Heat can exacerbate redness and swelling.
- Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser to wash your face. Avoid harsh
scrubs or exfoliants for a few days.
- Moisturize: Keep your skin hydrated with a gentle moisturizer. Look for products that are
free of fragrances and irritants.
- Avoid Makeup: Refrain from applying makeup immediately after treatment. Let your skin
breathe and heal naturally.
- Avoid Active Ingredients: Avoid using retinoids, glycolic acid, or other active ingredients for a few days. These can be too harsh on freshly treated skin.
- Patience: Results from IPL treatments take time. Be patient and allow your skin to
recover fully. You may notice improvements in pigmentation, texture, and overall
complexion over the next few weeks.
Contraindications of CO2 fractional laser treatment
Pre-Treatment Instructions:
Avoid sun exposure and tanning at least for 2 weeks before.
Be prepared for 3 to 7 days of typical down time.
Here is a list of things you will need:
-
Multi Antibiotic with Pain Relief Cream
-
Hydrocortisone
-
Aquaphor Healing Ointment
What is CO2 Fractional Laser Treatment?
CO2 Fractional Laser is a cosmetic procedure that uses controlled laser technology to resurface
the skin. It works by removing damaged outer layers of skin and stimulating the production of
new collagen, which helps to:
-
Reduce wrinkles and fine lines
-
Improve overall skin tone and texture
-
Address various other skin concerns
2. Contraindications (Who Should Avoid This Treatment?)
Treatment should be postponed or avoided if you have any of the following conditions:
-
Active Infections: Any bacterial, viral, or fungal infection in the area to be treated.
-
History of Abnormal Scarring: A personal history of keloid or hypertrophic scars.
-
History of Skin Cancer: Requires careful evaluation by a physician before proceeding.
-
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Treatment is generally not recommended during this time.
-
Active Inflammatory Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea in the treatment area
Pre-Care
To ensure safety and manage comfort, your provider may prescribe certain medications before
your procedure:
Topical Anesthetics: Numbing creams (e.g., lidocaine) are applied before treatment to
minimize pain.
Antibiotics: May be prescribed before and after the procedure to prevent bacterial
infection.
Antiviral Medications: Prescribed for patients with a history of the herpes simplex virus
(cold sores) to prevent an outbreak.
Home Care & After-Care
Proper home care is critical for healing and achieving the best results after your treatment.
● Pain: Swelling Management: Tylenol, Benadryl, and ice packs are often
recommended to manage discomfort, swelling, and itching.
● Wound Care: You will be instructed to use specific gentle cleansers, moisturizers, and high-SPF sunscreen to aid the healing process and protect the new, sensitive skin.
After a fractional CO2 laser treatment:
Aftercare focuses on gentle cleansing, consistent moisturizing with occlusive ointments (like Vaseline or Aquaphor), strict sun protection (SPF 30+), avoiding harsh products (retinoids, acids), and refraining from picking or strenuous activity to promote healing, minimize complications, and achieve optimal results. Expect swelling and redness initially, with normal flaking and crusting in the first week, gradually fading to pink skin that settles over several weeks. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Immediate Post-Treatment (First Few Days)
-
Cool Compresses: Apply ice packs or cold compresses for 15 minutes at a time to reduce initial swelling and discomfort.
-
Ointment Application: Your provider will apply an initial barrier cream (like petroleum jelly or an antibacterial cream) and you'll continue to apply it frequently to keep the skin moist and protected.
-
Gentle Cleansing: Wash the area twice daily with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser.
-
Avoid Irritants: Do not use retinoids, acids, benzoyl peroxide, or alcohol-based toners.
-
No Picking: Do not pick, rub, or scratch flaking skin or scabs, as this increases scarring risk.
-
Elevate Head: Sleep with your head elevated to help reduce swelling.
First Week of Healing
-
Continue Moisturizing: Keep the skin continuously covered with your recommended ointment to support healing.
-
Strict Sun Protection: Avoid sun exposure entirely. If you must go out, use a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen (SPF 30+) and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
-
Avoid Strenuous Activity: Skip exercise, heavy lifting, swimming, and hot tubs, saunas, or steam rooms to prevent irritation and infection.
-
No Smoking: Avoid smoking, as nicotine slows wound recovery.
Ongoing Care (Weeks to Months)
-
Hydrate Skin: Continue to moisturize generously as your skin heals.
-
Introduce Gentle Products: Gradually reintroduce gentle, non-irritating skincare products as your provider approves.
-
Continue Sun Protection: Maintain daily use of high SPF sunscreen to prevent pigmentation issues.
What to Expect
-
Day 1-2: Burning sensation, swelling, possible weeping fluid.
-
Day 2-4: Tightness, yellowish crusting, and the start of flaking.
-
Day 4-6: Itching is common, but avoid scratching.
-
Day 10+: Crusted areas should be gone, but skin will remain pink and may feel tight or itchy.
Always follow the specific instructions provided by your skincare professional for the best results.
